Acting Classes Taught by Artists Rep Staff & Resident Actors
ACTING CLASSES with MICHAEL MENDELSON
New sessions will begin September 2010

FOUNDATION CLASS - Meisner Work
Monday evenings from 6:30pm-9:30pm
October 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, December 6, 13
8 students

Based on Sanford Meisner's technique, the class is an exploration of the fundamentals of how we as actors communicate through behavior. First, a simple relaxation technique is taught that you'll be able to do on your own in about 15 minutes. Then, Simple Talking and Listening, employing Repeat Exercises; Working through Open Scenes-focusing on not only what is said but also how it is said, Listening!; Constructing Independent Activities; moving through Obstacles and Objectives; and then onto simple scene work, beginning with a creative read-through, and breaking down the first few beats.  Scene Study will begin with the creative read-through and moves on into Moment to Moment work, working off of what is being given to you with a deep rooted understanding of the Given Circumstances.

This class is for Stage, Film, or Television.

What we as Actor's strive for is to "live truthfully under the given imaginary circumstances." - Sanford Meisner
I believe this work opens us up to that in a powerful way.

ADVANCED SCENE STUDY
Saturdays from 10am to 1pm
September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20
8-10 students

This ADVANCED SCENE STUDY CLASS will focus on Classic American Material.   Tennessee Williams, Horton Foote, Clifford Odets and Eugene O'Neill.  It's a nuts-and-bolts look at scene study. We will be focusing on defining beats, relationships, moment-to-moment work, spacial relationships, needs/wants, always working off of what is being given to you from your partner with special attention paid to the given imaginary circumstances of the scene. We will discuss point of view and the "human condition" a lot. We will spend time on "impulse/response".

This is a class for the actor who has more than just a basic understanding of the craft, an actor who is wanting to be challenged and pushed, an actor who has hit a wall or wants to break free of the box in which they find themselves. Diving into a class is the best way to break barriers. You will work on two scenes of my choosing during the 10-week session.

*If Michael does not know you or your work, he will want to meet you and talk before acceptance into the class.

A Master class exploring the work, style and complexities of performing the work of two of literature's greatest playwrights. Noel Coward and Edward Albee are theatrical soulmates with a wide variety of shared traits and stylistic connections. Their work is frequently performed in a facile, surface style that can reduce their detailed, highly stylized, yet powerfully real, work to cliche. This class will explore and contrast both their work, lives and social milieu to help give the actor a strong base from which to explore their writing in a focused and organic manner. The class will be limited to 8 - 10 accomplished actors who wish to further their experience in analyzing and exploring the work of these 2 remarkable talents. Actors will prepare and perform 2 scenes (1 from each playwright) taking the time to fully explore the particular language, characterization, energy and dramatic action of each in detail.

**Actors must have a strong acting background and interview with the instructor for placement in the class.**
