"The Talented Ones"...heard!
Last night, we hosted an outstanding semi-private reading of The Talented Ones by Yussef El Guindi!
Audiences LOVED IT! As Artists Rep Guild Member Len Magazine wrote in a Facebook post this morning, "You won't want to miss this one when it is produced because it is about life, relationships, marriage, bigotry, immigration and dreams. Not only is it smartly written, but it flows smoothly with humor and with such intensity, we were on the edge of our seats wondering where this was going, especially at intermission. The set up left us breathless with anticipation."
The reading was directed by Jane Unger and featured Heath Koerchgen (Patrick), Khanh Doan (Cindy), Barbie Wu (Dancer/Younger Cindy), Murri Lazaroff-Babin (Omar’s Father/Younger Omar) and John San Nicolas (Omar), with stage directions by Alissa Jessup.
This was the very first reading as part of Table|Room|Stage with the Oregon Community Foundation’s “Creative Heights Initiative.” This reading was part of our commitment to hold readings and workshops of our new play commissions to aid the playwrights as they develop their new work. The Talented Ones is part of our 2016/17 season, on stage next season April 25-May 21, 2017.
The American Dream teeters on the edge of the abyss as immigrants Cindy and Omar face their thwarted dreams and unraveling marriage while Omar’s buddy Patrick connives to push them over the edge. In this surprisingly funny dark comedy, trouble erupts one night when bad choices are followed by verrrrry bad choices. The stakes become lethal as these characters manipulate the truth and do anything to justify their desires.
