Artists Rep’s Technical Director, Van J. McQueen started his technical theatre career in the seventh grade, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Van has been working in almost every aspect of technical theater in Portland for 16 years. Van has special interests in Automation, SPFX design, Electronics, Metal Working, Sculpting, Vaccu-forming. At one local scene shop he earned the title Mr. Exotic Materials. He has performed scenic consulting and construction for clients as varied as Michael Curry Productions, the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, Nike’s Display and Design Group; Rigging Electrics on the feature film Men Of Honor; He has designed scenery or scenic elements for several theatres in town, Portland Repertory Theater, Do Jump, Northwest Children’s Theatre and designed and created weapons for The Hobbit (Northwest Children’s Theatre). Van recently returned from Oslo, Norway, where he was a finalist at the International Uno World Championships. When not working at Artists Rep, Van enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, blacksmithing, gardening and collecting dust.
