In the House

Without playwrights, Table|Room|Stage would be nothing at all – as cold and lonesome as an empty table, a musty room, a darkened stage. But then, what would theatre itself be without playwrights? Nothing! Just a lot of waiting… waiting without even the slimmest possibility that Godot will ever show up. Thank goodness we don’t have to live in such a dark and dreary world!

At Artists Rep, we celebrate playwrights At the TableOn the Workbench, and with productions by the most exciting writers we can find. We seek to create a welcoming, effective environment for these essential storytellers, whether they are in residence for a week-long workshop, are here for rehearsals of their play, or a part of our ongoing work as Resident Artists.

Starting in March 2017, Andrea Stolowitz will be our Lacroute Playwright-in-Residence. Under the generous patronage of Ronni Lacroute, Andrea has several years to focus entirely on writing plays and developing her career. She will be in residence at Artists Rep for at least two years and will use part of that time on Recent Unsettling Events. Over five years, Andrea will create several new plays, cultivate professional relationships with other theaters, and most importantly, have time to think, to write, and to be here, where theatre happens. This is all possible through Ronni Lacroute’s commitment to art and to Oregon – a remarkable gift to us all!

Andrea Stolowitz’s plays have been developed and presented nationally and internationally at theaters such as The Long Wharf, The Old Globe, The Cherry Lane, and New York Stage and Film.  The LA Times calls her work “heartbreaking” and the Orange County Register characterizes her approach as a “brave refusal to sugarcoat issues and tough decisions.”

Andrea’s latest play Recent Unsettling Events is an Artists’ Repertory Theatre Commission and is a finalist for PlayPenn and the O’Neill summer conferences.

Andrea’s play The Berlin Diaries is a recipient of the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment  Women’s Film, TV and Theatre Fund. The play will be produced in New York City in March 2021. The Berlin Diaries has had workshop presentations at English Theater Berlin/International Performing Arts Center and Portland’s Hand2Mouth Theatre Company. It was developed at The Playwrights’ Center, New Dramatists, PlayPenn, and The New Harmony Project.

A recipient of Artists Repertory Theater’s Fowler/Levin new play commission, Andrea premiered her play Ithaka at the theatre in 2013. The play had its mid-west premiere in Chicago in 2014 at InFusion Theater and its Canada premiere in May 2016. The play won the 2015 Oregon Book Award in Drama judged by Naomi Iizuka.

Andrea’s play Antarktikos also won the Oregon Book Award for Drama and was published in July 2013 in TheatreForum magazine. The play world-premiered at The Pittsburgh Playhouse. It was nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and received a 2015 Kilroy’s List Honorable Mention.

Knowing Cairo world-premiered at the Old Globe Theatre, which earned San Diego’s “Billie” Best New Play Award and an LA Times’ Critic’s Pick. It is published by Playscripts Inc. and continues to be produced nationally and internationally.

Andrea works as a collaborating writer with the award-winning devised theater company Hand2Mouth . Her current collaboration Pep Talk is touring nationally. The San Francisco Chronicle says “The genius of ‘Pep Talk’ is that it is at once a collective unburdening…in the way the best drama has always been, while also being very funny and self-aware.” She is currently at work on their latest collaboration Psychic Utopia.

Andrea is the Lacroute Playwright-in-Residence at Artists Repertory Theater where she has just received a new play commission. She is a member of New Dramatists class of 2024 and a core member at The Playwrights’ Center.

An MFA playwriting alumna of UC-San Diego, Andrea has served on the faculties at Willamette University, The University of Portland, Duke University and UC-San Diego.
